Under siege

In a quiet, leafy and affluent suburb of London lies a house that is surrounded all day long by screaming teenage girls.

Its residents, Olly, Danyl, Lloyd, John, Edward, Rachel, Jamie, Lucie, Stacey and Joe are currently the UK's most famous aspiring pop stars.

All 10 of them are enjoying their overnight success, signing autographs, accepting gifts and having their picture taken, when leaving their current residency - which is, of course, The X Factor house.

With its address easily located on the internet it has quickly become the favourite place for bored teenagers to go during half-term.

But what started out as a bit of harmless fun became a little out of hand recently when police were called to keep crowds under control.

Fans bring banners and presents

It made front page headlines, with claims that "pressure was mounting" on X Factor bosses to move the contestants to a new, secret location after locals complained of "noise and disturbance" and "girls flashing" at their heart-throbs.

Now the local council has announced it has closed the road to through traffic amid "safety fears".

"I got punched in the back of the head yesterday," admits 16-year-old Kadra Hosh, from Pinner, who has taken time off work to wait outside the house.

"Police were called and they bought barriers in after people started to get hurt. It's really aggressive, but I love it. It makes you want to come down even more."

Having made friends with other fans she insists it is a "really good experience" even if you do not get to meet any of the X Factor hopefuls.

Alana Robinson, 13, from Barnet agrees that the crowd surge has not put her off.

"We were here on Monday and there was about a hundred people here.

"When Rachel and Lucie came out, everyone just ran. We got pushed into the side of a car and we almost got hit. It was a bit scary," she says.

Sophie Simmonds, 13, says when any of the finalists turn up, fans go crazy.

"We stand out and when they appear everyone screams and runs. They had to bring more police out to hold people back. It does get a bit dangerous.

"When Lloyd was here someone got pushed over and people were climbing over the fences. I think the atmosphere is a bit mad really," she says.

Waiting on a pavement all day takes its toll, as fans have no access to toilets or food and drink.

But for Kadra Hosh, that does not matter.

"I don't eat when I'm here because I don't want to leave," she says.

"I want to make them notice me, once they notice you, they will remember you. At the end of the day they're just normal people trying to make it big."

'Traffic issue'

Blankets and sheets have been hung inside the house to prevent anyone looking in - including the paparazzi.

But fans try to communicate by scribbling messages and hanging banners from the gates, unfailingly declaring love for their current favourite.

An X Factor spokeswoman said the show was "working with local residents and police to diminish disruption".

According to newspaper reports, Chinese Ambassador Madam Fu Ying - who reportedly lives on the same road as the contestants' house - has made an official complaint to the British government.

But a spokeswoman for the Chinese Embassy said she was "neither aware of the X Factor story nor the complaint".

Thirteen-year-old Theya Marks from Cockfosters has even come armed with gifts.

"We give them all presents and bake them cookies. We've come so may times, we've come for about 13 hours all together, they love us," she says.

It is not just teenage girls standing outside, however, but their mothers too.

Eleanor Marko, claims she is the official "taxi driver" to get her brood down to the house.

"I don't mind, it makes a change and it's free," she says.

"We haven't seen anyone, which is a bit of a disappointment."

Despite reports that local residents are getting irritated with the noise and litter the fans are making, Lisa Lyons, who lives opposite the house and is mother of seven, says she is enjoying the whole experience.

"It's not a problem at all. I think there are a few neighbours who are upset about it, but it hasn't upset me at all," she says.

"There's a bit of a traffic issue, but the children are very well behaved. I think it's a nice atmosphere.

"My son actually runs a shop here everyday, he sells drinks, chocolates and crisps and he's doing very well. He's giving a percentage to charity.

Indeed the crowd, although very noisy, seem happy to obey the two security guards who have been employed to keep everyone out of the road.

But drivers, who refused to stop, beep their horns in annoyance as they pass the fans.

Mother-of-two Afsaneh Parveasy, who lives nearby, agrees the fans have "impacted" the residents.

"This is a quiet area so it's quite interesting to get this commotion going on, it's all rather ridiculous," she says.

"That road is never busy and we've had to park miles away - it has impacted us, but it's good for the children, I've got two and they're very excited.

"But I'm glad I don't live next to the X Factor house."

Offer made for stake in Setanta

Setanta only won one package of live Premier League games from 2010/11

US investor Len Blavatnik is offering £20m in return for a 51% stake in the troubled Irish pay-tv channel Setanta.

Access Industries, which is owned by Mr Blavatnik, said it had submitted a proposal but gave no further details.

Other investors have signalled they may be prepared to put in a further £20m, the BBC has learned.

Setanta has been hit by a lack of subscribers and by only winning one of the new English Premier League TV packages starting in 2010/11.

Mr Blavatnik is also involved with Top-Up TV, the pay-TV channel on Freeview.

His plan has a reasonable chance of succeeding, according to the BBC's business editor Robert Peston.

If other investors put in a further £20m or so, it may be enough to refinance the business, he says.

Sources close to Setanta said that it had received an offer for the majority of the company, which the board was recommending, although it was subject to a closer look at the company's accounts.

Toby Syfret from Enders Analysis said Mr Blavatnik's involvement with Top-Up TV meant that he would not want to see Setanta go under.

"Top-Up TV is one means by which Freeview subscribers can get Setanta. They either go to Setanta directly or through Top-Up TV.

"So it's very important for Top-Up TV that Setanta manages to survive in good shape," he said.

Mounting debts

Mr Blavatnik, who works with the former boss of BSkyB David Chance, has not been immune from the fall-out of the credit crisis.

A huge petrochemicals maker he backed, LyondellBasell, has collapsed, meaning big losses for its creditors, which include Royal Bank of Scotland.

Setanta, which shows cricket, golf and rugby union as well as football, has about 1.2 million subscribers.

On Wednesday, Setanta confirmed it had stopped taking on new customers.

The company has been holding urgent talks in an attempt to secure its future. An approach to rival broadcaster BSkyB failed, while Walt Disney-owned sports network ESPN denied speculation on Thursday that it would buy Setanta.

Under the current UK broadcast deal for the English Premier League, which lasts for one more season, BSkyB holds four packages of rights to show live matches - a total of 92 games - while Setanta has the other two packages, which cover 46 games.

However, for the TV deal starting in 2010/11 Setanta only won the rights to show one Premier League package of 23 games per season.

Nabokov gets November release

Dimitri Nabokov agonised for years over publishing his father's last work

Vladimir Nabokov's final novel is to be published by Penguin later this year.

Nabokov wrote The Original of Laura on 138 index cards, each of which will be reproduced with a transcript of their text on the facing page.

The Russian author left instructions after his death in 1977 that the unfinished work be destroyed. His son took the decision to publish last year.

Penguin paid a six figure sum for the new work and continued back catalogue rights and will publish on 3 November.

The book will be published simultaneously in the UK and the United States.

Alexis Kirschbaum, editor at Penguin Classics, dealt personally with Nabokov's son Dimitri over the deal: "It was quite emotional for Dimitri because it was a big decision to publish, which took him decades."

The work has been stored in a Swiss bank vault for 30 years.

'Kernels of genius'

Vladimir Nabokov had at one point also intended to burn Lolita, the work which made his name, and was only stopped from doing so by his wife.

The Original of Laura is narrated by a man infatuated with his promiscuous wife, thinking back to the start of his obsession when they were youths.

Kirschbaum says the new work is both dark and comic, exploring "what it means to hate yourself and want to disappear."

"It's incredibly interesting to see his handwriting and read his prose - not necessarily extremely polished, but you can still see kernels of genius in everything he wrote," she added.

The publisher also announced that in 2010 they would print a collection of Nabokov's poems which have not been seen before in the English language.

A year later they plan to release a completely unseen exchange of letters between Nabokov and his wife.

The Original of Laura will be published as a hardback costing £25.

Singer claims: 'INXS dropped me'

Fortune is working on a solo album, Death of a Motivational Speaker

The singer who won a reality TV competition to front Australian rockers INXS says he is broke and living in his car after the band sacked him.

JD Fortune has told Canada's Entertainment Tonight that he was dismissed with a handshake and a thank you after a world tour.

The singer also admitted he began using cocaine during his time with the band.

INXS, currently on a break, have not commented on Fortune's claims but their website still lists him as singer.

The band had a string of hits in the 1980s and 1990s including New Sensation and Need You Tonight but in 1997 charismatic frontman Michael Hutchence was found dead.

Four different singers have since been in the band's line-up and Rock Star: INXS was their latest attempt to find a permanent front man.

"Really alone"

Canadian Fortune beat ten other finalists to the role. They recorded just one album, Switch, in 2005 and followed the release with a two year world tour.

He said he was hurt by the band's decision to let him go: " I found myself really alone because I had travelled with these guys for 23 months."

Fortune says he has been off drugs for two years and is living in the back of his pickup after putting his remaining INXS earnings into funding his new solo album.
